{"id":3722,"date":"2009-04-22T11:56:40","date_gmt":"2009-04-22T19:56:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/?p=3722"},"modified":"2009-04-22T11:58:20","modified_gmt":"2009-04-22T19:58:20","slug":"mar-23-fitz-roy-to-rio-gallegos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/22\/mar-23-fitz-roy-to-rio-gallegos\/","title":{"rendered":"Mar. 23 &#8211; Fitz Roy to Rio Gallegos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sort of an early start;\u00a0 we return to the comidor on main street for breakfast, such as it is.\u00a0 No grease for sale at the gas station, so we sigh deeply, unable to re-grease the new wheel bearings,\u00a0 and head out on the windy, desert road.\u00a0 Windy is an understatement.<\/p>\n<p>We drive for 400 miles,\u00a0 stopping only for coffee,\u00a0 food and gas, eating in the gas stations.\u00a0 Desolate, empty, flat desert everywhere.\u00a0 We see some camelids, and weird ostrich-like birds called nandus (http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhea_(bird)).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Crazy wind the entire way.\u00a0 Exhausting ride.<\/p>\n<p>Rio Gallegos is a larger town,\u00a0 the first we have been in in a while;\u00a0 paved streets, real shops and hotels.\u00a0 Weather is decidely more chilly now.\u00a0 We locate a decent hostel, with real down comforters and clean sheets, and have a good fish dinner.\u00a0 It feels good to have so much of the southward leg of this part of the trip completed.\u00a0 Tierra del Fuego is now within a days ride.\u00a0 We are excited.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sort of an early start;\u00a0 we return to the comidor on main street for breakfast, such as it is.\u00a0 No grease for sale at the gas station, so we sigh deeply, unable to re-grease the new wheel bearings,\u00a0 and head out on the windy, desert road.\u00a0 Windy is an understatement.
