{"id":420,"date":"2009-01-06T22:02:32","date_gmt":"2009-01-07T06:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/?p=420"},"modified":"2009-01-06T22:09:25","modified_gmt":"2009-01-07T06:09:25","slug":"jan-6-a-quiet-day-in-oaxaca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/2009\/01\/06\/jan-6-a-quiet-day-in-oaxaca\/","title":{"rendered":"Jan. 6 &#8211; A quiet day in Oaxaca"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Woke to a beautiful morning after a good night&#8217;s sleep.\u00a0 Hot shower,\u00a0 a good breakfast close by &#8211; life is good!<\/p>\n<p>Levi took off with some fellow hostel guests for a trip to Monte Alban archaeological site;\u00a0 I stuck around the hostel neighborhood and just took it easy.\u00a0 Did some laundry, reading, sitting in the sun.<\/p>\n<p>When Levi returned in late afternoon, we walked to a fabulous old church near the Zocalo, and it was spectacular &#8211; the ceilings and walls were covered in art and gold leaf everywhere.\u00a0 Just incredible!<\/p>\n<p>After that we went to one of the main markets for our last dinner here &#8211; we both had chicken in mole &#8211; a Oaxacan specialty.\u00a0 Terrific.\u00a0 We stopped at an english-language bookstore and replenished our stock of reading material (at wildly overpriced cost!), and saw some fantastic local artwork and craft-work.\u00a0 Even got treated to another fireworks display in the sky over the hostel!<\/p>\n<p>The trip to the market was upsetting for me.\u00a0 The market here is huge, and wonderful in many ways;\u00a0 the selection of fruits and vegetables is just spectacular, with all of the produce so fresh and lovely, and so much variety that there are dozens of items I cannot even identify.\u00a0 But too many of the booths and street stalls are now selling cheap imported Chinese junk;\u00a0 lots of throw-away, disposable, consumer crap that was not here before &#8211; plastic bags and cell phones and cheap electronic trash and all the rest of the wal-mart junk that we consume and then discard so much of in the US.\u00a0 It saddened my heart, and soul, to see how much it has changed, and how it has changed;\u00a0 how so much of what makes our cultures unique, and truely human, has vanished in just my short life time.\u00a0 I was reminded again, how much we have lost, and not just in the US.\u00a0 This is progress?\u00a0 Progress towards what?\u00a0 Baahh!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_416\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/dscn3116.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-416\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-416\" title=\"a partial wall of re-used green stone at the hostel\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/dscn3116-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"a partial wall of re-used green stone at the hostel\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/dscn3116-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/dscn3116-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.longridesouth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/dscn3116.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">a partial wall of re-used green stone at the hostel<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Woke to a beautiful morning after a good night&#8217;s sleep.\u00a0 Hot shower,\u00a0 a good breakfast close by &#8211; life is good!
